Few things are more frustrating than a garage door that opens fine but refuses to close — or closes halfway and reverses. The good news: the cause is often simple. Here are the seven most common reasons, starting with the ones you can safely check yourself.
1. Blocked or misaligned safety sensors
Modern openers have two photo-eye sensors near the bottom of the tracks. If they're misaligned, dirty, or something is in the beam, the door won't close (and usually the opener lights blink). Check that both sensors face each other, wipe the lenses, and clear any obstruction.
2. Something in the door's path
Sensors will also stop the door for a real obstruction — a trash can, a stray broom, even a buildup of leaves on the threshold. Take a quick look along the bottom of the door.
3. Limit settings are off
The opener's "travel limits" tell it how far to move. If the close-limit is set wrong, the door may reverse thinking it hit the floor. This is an adjustment on the opener — best handled by a technician if you're not sure.
4. A broken or loose cable
If a lift cable has snapped or slipped off its drum, the door can hang crooked and refuse to close properly. This needs professional repair — don't operate the door.
5. Worn or off-track rollers
Rollers that have come out of the track, or are badly worn, cause the door to bind. You may see the door catching at the same spot every time.
6. A broken spring
If the door is suddenly very heavy or only the opener struggles to move it, a spring may have broken. Stop using the door — a door with a broken spring is unsafe.
7. Remote, wall-button, or power issues
Sometimes it's the simplest thing: a dead remote battery, a locked wall console, or a tripped outlet. Try the wall button and check the opener has power.
